Welcome to Tanana: A Stronghold of Koyukon Athabascan Culture
Tanana (Koyukon: Hohudzet Na’) is a first-class city in the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area of the U.S. state of Alaska. Situated at the strategic confluence of the Tanana and Yukon Rivers, the site has served as a vital crossroads for trade, transport, and communication for centuries.
Long before European contact, the location was known as Nuchalawoya (meaning "where the two rivers meet"), serving as a traditional neutral meeting ground for the Koyukon and Tanana Athabascans. Following Western expansion, it evolved into a key military and transit hub during the early 20th century.
